The Australian Indigenous Communications Association Incorporated is a body that represents members of the National Indigenous Media and Communications Industry. The Representative Association advocates for and formulates policy on behalf of this sector. During the 1980s and 1990s, enthusiastic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in many parts of Australia, with the help of very limited ATSIC, DICTA and now DEWHA funding, established community based radio and television stations. As new technology became more widely assessable, we developed to the point where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations now own and control:

• Over 105 unique, small community radio and television broadcasting facilities (known as RIBS Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Service) in remote communities;
• 25 licenced community radio stations in regional and urban centres;
• Several community television services;
• One commercial radio service;
• One commercial television service;
• Many video-conference facilities; and
• Several community and commercial print and multi-media enterprises.
